As a contract sewing company with over thirty years experience in the textile industry, we know that being able to sew is a great skill to have, whether you sew professionally or even if it’s just a hobby.

There are so many reasons why it’s great to have sewing as a skill, many of which most people aren’t even aware of when they start learning. Here are just six of those reasons.

You can mend your own things

One of the best things about being able to sew is being able to fix things! Even if you’re a beginner, you should be able to stitch up small rips and tears. Most clothes are made in big factories nowadays and the quality isn’t always great. It’s all too often that a button falls off, or you get a loose thread from a poorly sewn seam. It’s both annoying and wasteful to throw a whole garment away, so being able to sew comes in really handy.

For those with children, being able to sew and fix things is really useful. Kids like to run around and often play rough, they’re always tearing holes in their clothes and even their soft toys.

Being able to alter clothing is another advantage of being able to sew. You may want to make a few items of clothing into maternity wear, rather than buying a new wardrobe for example. Or, if you’ve recently lost some weight, you might want to take some clothes in. That’s all relatively easy to do if you can sew!

Make unique gifts for friends and family

Giving somebody a unique, customised gift feels great. People really appreciate gifts like this because they know that you put in a lot of time and effort to create them. Whether you’re putting an initial on a pillowcase or embroidering a funny quote into a placemat, your friend will be sure to love it.

Personalised, sewn gifts are perfect for any occasion, a wedding, a baby shower or even a graduation. Whoever the gift is for, they will love that they have a gift that nobody else has made especially for them.

Protect the environment

The fact that you’re able to mend your own clothes and other textiles means less waste, which is great for the environment. If you want to do more to help the environment and other communities, you could also take the extra care to source threads and fabrics which are organic, fair trade and responsibility sourced.

A great creative outlet

Sewing is just as creative as painting, sculpting or any other art form – especially if you’re designing, making and creating your own items. Sewing is a stimulating activity and at the same time, it’s very therapeutic. You get to sit down to a task and escape the outside world and all the stress that comes with it.

Having a great creative outlet like sewing which lets you develop your problem-solving abilities will come to help you in other areas of your life as well and you’ll be sure to see the benefits in the long run.

Save money

We’ve already mentioned that being able to sew means you can mend your own things. This means you’ll be throwing away less and buying fewer replacement items. If you decide to take your sewing skills to the next level and begin designing your own garments and other textiles, you’ll save even more money. You may also have friends commissioning you to make things for them too.

Build confidence

A sewing project takes planning, preparation and focus. Being able to complete a project to a great standard gives you a sense of accomplishment and is a huge confidence boost. Plus, other people seeing your finished project and complimenting you on your work will boost your self-esteem.

You never know when your sewing skills will come in handy. If you have children, they might ask you to make an outfit for one of their dolls, or a fantastic Halloween costume that nobody else at school will have.

Sewing is also a great activity to do with friends, why not invite some friends over for a sewing evening, where you can work on a project and have a nice catch-up.

Learning to sew will save you money, save the environment and help to build your confidence and creativity. There really is no downside to learning!
